Changing the chemical equation

Article Abstract:

Sandoz of Basle, Switzerland, aims to concentrate on its nutrition and pharmaceuticals businesses while turning its industrial chemicals unit into an independent operation in order to distinguish between the chemicals and pharmaceuticals industries for investment purposes. Speciality chemicals and global dyestuffs concern Sandoz Chemicals accounted for 14% of group turnover in 1994 with sales of 2.32 billion Swiss Francs, with the firm expecting to benefit from being able to make its own investment decisions following the demerger. The Sandoz group aims to expand via the nutrition and health sectors.

Fisons' radical sales may not keep it independent

Article Abstract:

The decision by pharmaceutical company Fisons PLC to divest its research and development activities and concentrate on producing, marketing and distributing drugs may leave it vulnerable to takeover. By stripping away none-core businesses, Fisons is a more attractive target, according to analysts. The criticism follows Fisons agreement to sell most of its R&D activities to Sweden's Astra, saving Fisons up to 45 million pounds sterling a year in research costs.
