Simmering tensions threaten Indonesia's prosperity

Article Abstract:

The Indonesian economy has grown steadily over the years and it is now one of the most impressive in Southeast Asia. However, some observers warn that the country's prosperity has also fanned a deep resentment towards Pres. Suharto's family and the country's ethnic Chinese community. Many Indonesians feel that the members of the Suharto family have used their political clout to enrich themselves. Locals also resent the closed nature of the ethnic Chinese community and how they have been left with a grossly disproportionate share of the country's growing affluence.

Asian family values can teach the West

Article Abstract:

An American professor who went on a Fulbright Lectureship in Indonesia believes that Westerners can learn much from Asians when it comes to family values. Unlike in the US where the youth have become self-centered and unaware of the history of their present prosperity, young Indonesians are aware of the harsh realities of life as narrated by their rural relations. In addition, Asians still give their elders the respect due them unlike their American counterparts.

Asia leaves itself poorer when it derides the West

Article Abstract:

Many Asian leaders, smug in their new prosperity, tend to criticize the West for pushing its ideas. They state that Asians have their own values and that Western concepts are unsuited for Asian cultures. This kind of argument ignores the Western ideas which have made it possible for Asian nations to achieve their new affluence.
