Dire straits?

Article Abstract:

China is seeking to join the World Trade Organization (WTO) and there are many countries that support this move, since a number of companies want access to Chinese markets. Talks have resumed between China and the European Union, and the US administration is seeking to persuade Congress to allow China to join. Problems between Taiwan and China could create problems for China's application. Support from Congress is not needed if China's entry is backed by the administration, with a waiver from World Trade Organization obligations toward China. This could mean that China also seeks a waiver, and US exporters are disadvantaged compared with Japanese and European exporters.

Prepare for fireworks

Article Abstract:

President Bill Clinton wants to persuade Congress to allow China to join the World Trade Organization (WTO). There is a number of groups opposed to Chinese membership of the WTO, from labor unions to protesters over human rights. There are protectionists, and those who oppose Chinese communism. Congress is unwilling to vote until the terms of entry for China have been clarified. A delay may mean that a decision on permanent access is postponed until 2001, while the annual renewal of Chinese access to US markets is dealt with first.

Faking it

Article Abstract:

China has been denied membership in the World Trade Organization since it seems not to understand the principles of free trade, and because it must further relax its restrictions on foreign trade. The US and China have their own set of problems as trading partners yet both gain immensely from the relationship.
