Dissenting voice: human-rights activist turns his ire on the West

Article Abstract:

Chandra Muzaffar, Malaysia's best-known social activist and the founder of two reform groups, commands respect for his convictions even from his opponents. In Dec 1994 he invited Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mahathir Mohamad, who once had him arrested, to give the keynote address at an international human-rights conference. Chandra founded Aliran in 1977 to promote change in Malaysian society, and in 1991, in response to the Gulf War and what he saw as Western domination, he launched Just World Trust.

Cannes Do, Lah

Article Abstract:

The success of Eric Khoo's 12 Storeys at the Cannes Film festival points to a revival of Singapore's motion picture industry. The industry performed well in the 1950s and 1960s and disappeared in 1973. Hong Kong and Taiwanese movies have since tended to predominate. Movie makers face some problems such as a scarcity of studios and production facilities. Censorship also affects movie-makers, though Khoo sees restrictions as making story telling more interesting.

Paradise lost

Article Abstract:

The Asian economic crisis is having a negative impact on the tourist industry on the Malaysian island of Langkawi. The island attracted only 1.6 million visitors in 1997, down by 6% from 1996, and visitor numbers appear to have declined further in 1998. Many small shops supplying the needs of tourists in the main town of Kuah have been forced to close, and hotel owners are seeking to survive a slump in visitor numbers by offering conference facilities.
