Diva with a difference

Article Abstract:

Professional singer Barbara Hendricks, although born and educated in the US, has found living with her family in Montreaux, Switzerland, for 11 years a very settling experience. An acclaimed singing talent, particularly in opera, Hendricks believes that music is an ultimate sharing experience and has a unifying effect on the audience. However, she has found other ways to connect with people all over the world, primarily as Goodwill Ambassador for the UN High Commission for Refugees and as president of her own Assn for Humanitarian Action. Both her music and her civic work have brought her to such far-flung places as Africa, Bosnia and Sarajevo.

A tragic royal figure

Article Abstract:

The late Empress Elisabeth (Sissi) of Austria-Hungary had earned a reputation of being a rebel and a liberated woman during her life. There were certain aspects of her life that mirror that of the later Princess Diana. She married Emperor Franz-Josef of Austria-Hungary in 1853 at the age of 16. She was very much concerned with her figure and dieted to the point of being anorexic. She was also fond of travelling and would rather stay in Hungary than mix with the royalty in Vienna. Sissi was stabbed dead by an Italian anarchist outside the Beau-Ravage Hotel in Geneva, Switzerland, on Sep 10, 1898.

The great violinist Yehudi Menuhin enjoys the special kind of relationship that the Swiss still share with their country despite the pollution of the mountains and their modern development. He believes that all children are gifted but that only some are given the opportunity to develop their craft. His various achievements in the field of music has earned him a knighthood in 1965, a life peerage in 1993 and a seat in the House of Lords.
