DoE unsettles developers

Article Abstract:

The decision by environment secretary Michael Heseltine to reject all eight new settlement plans for various parts of the A45 near Cambridge, UK, is regarded by developers as going against the DoE's statement that new settlements can bring relief to areas where there is high demand for housing. The DoE's decision is against the Cambridgeshire Structure Plan, and does not take into account the support given by a public planning enquiry to the Great Common Farm plan. The failure by the DoE to publish the PPG3 is also delaying clarification of the new settlement planning policy guidance.

No-frills/low-cost airlines

Article Abstract:

No-frills/low-cost airlines had limited impact on the market by the end of 1998, but expansion plans indicate they will be a threat to the major airlines into the next millennium. BA formed its no-frills/low cost subsidiary GO in 1998 to compete against low-cost carriers such as easyJet. Traditional airlines starting up their own low-cost airlines, may take customers away from their own services. There is not normally competition for routes, but as the low cost sector opens up new routes they will be in direct competition with other low-cost carriers.
