Docklands hits stumbling block

Article Abstract:

Development of offices in London, England's Docklands is likely to be halted following the demise of Canary Wharf developer, Olympia and York. Not only is there an oversupply of office space in London but also further development in Docklands cannot become viable unless the Jubilee Line extension of the London Underground is built. Olympia and York was to have provided a significant proportion of the cost of this but its bankers are unlikey to invest. The political parties are also reluctant to fund the work. Canary Wharf is likely to remain an unfinished symbol of the excess of the 1980s until the recession ends and the property market stabilises.

Docklands defined

Article Abstract:

The key buildings of the Docklands area of London, England, are placed in their historical and architectural context by 'London: Docklands,' a Pevsner guide to the area to be released as part of the Buildings of England series. The area contains buildings of many different ages and styles, including terraced houses dating from the late seventeenth to early eighteenth century in Narrow Street, Limehouse, and Nelson House in Rotherhithe Street, constructed between 1730 and 1740.
