Article Abstract:

Elements of the UK's national culture, along with elements of the current tax regime, are providing a barrier to the development of extremely successful new technology firms in the UK. It is vital that new technology firms have professional, entrepreneurial managers who know what it is like to be successful and are willing to take risks. However, there are a number of ways in which such people are currently being discouraged from becoming associated with new technology firms. It is also important to move away from the perception of entrepreneurs as being concerned only with their own wealth.

Article Abstract:

The UK's small companies have consistently performed worse than their larger counterparts since 1994. For this reason, small companies have become an attractive takeover target, and there has been a rise in small company corporate activity. The market is not providing enough capital for the expansion of small companies, or only at higher cost to balance out the greater risk. There are few opportunities for listing small companies, and the number of listings dropped by 11% in 1998, while the number of de-listings rose by 47%.

Opportunities for smaller companies. (evolutionary cycle for smaller companies becomes more efficient)

Article Abstract:

The evolutionary cycle for medium and smaller sized companies is becoming more efficient. Typical cycles involve the buyout by a management team of a non-core subsidiary of a quoted PLC backed by private investors, after which institutions seek realisation of their capital. The second stage of the cycle involves institutional exits such as flotations which provide liquidity and access to new capital, and trade sales.
