Doom lurks in LDP's 'save small business' policy

Article Abstract:

Japan's inability to learn from its 10-year-long economic malaise and make the necessary reforms may be rooted in the Liberal Democratic Party's relationship its major constituency--the thousands of 300-or-less-employees small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and those employees themselves. Less than 1/3rd of the SMEs, which account for 99.3% of the nation's businesses, is involved in value-creating manufacturing, but accounts for about 40% of the manufacturing sector's revenues and 70% of employment. The impact the SMEs have on the Japanese economy and the Liberal Democratic Party are discussed.

For Vietnam politics, it's been a year of confusion

Article Abstract:

The Communist Party in Vietnam in 1996 has been characterized by instability mainly caused by the illness of Pres. Le Duc Anh which has fueled a power struggle among likely successors. The most powerful figure after Pres. Ahn is Gen. Phieu who is feared by social democrats based in the south. However, Phieu cannot be too sure about his political future as his current clout derives mainly from Anh, who is expected to retire soon from the political scene.
