Double standards for China

Article Abstract:

China should be admitted to the World Trade Organization to encourage its development, provide mechanisms for keeping it within the rules, and prevent the ascension of hard-line defiance against those seen as trying to keep it down. Arguments that China is not ready for the multilateral trading system, that its economy does not fit into the WTO, that it is a developed country in terms of actual per-capita buying power, and that the requirements demanded of it are necessary, are all disingenuous. China's aspirations cannot constantly be rebuffed without grave consequences for everyone.

Softly, softly

Article Abstract:

The Taiwanese government continues to be ambivalent towards investments in China, although Taiwanese companies see their future prosperity linked to expansion on the mainland. Small- and medium-sized companies are in the best position to circumvent Taiwan's strict investment regulations, although some have fallen foul of the unfriendly mainland investment climate. Taiwanese exports to China amounted to $9.53 billion during the first half of 1997, up 6% from the year earlier period, with China accounting for 16% of Taiwan's total exports.

Pygmies of G7: interest groups tower over 'leaders' at Tokyo summit

Article Abstract:

The domestic disenchantment with the leaders of the Group of Seven industrialized nations (G7) demonstrates the increasing irrelevance of their economic policies. Special interests, by calling for trade quotas and protectionism, are preventing the G7 nations from fully integrating into the global economy. Last year's growth rates of East Asia's top six developing economies far outpaced the G7 average, demonstrating the benefits of free trade over those of special interests.
