Down but not out

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong Governor Chris Patten's popularity has slid in the past year, to the point that the Legislative Council considered its first no-confidence vote ever. While the motion was defeated, Patten still has many foes, largely over what they consider a cave-in to Chinese demands on establishing a Court of Final Appeal. Patten's approval rating fell from 65% in July 1992 to 54% in July 1995, partly because Beijing's opposition to many of his changes convinced many in Hong Kong that Patten was going too far.

Tide of democracy

Article Abstract:

Industrialist and politician Vincent Lo is leading a section of Hongkong's pro-China business community in opposing the democratic reforms recommended by Governor Chris Patten. The Hongkong Legislative Council (Legco) has supported the political reforms. Political analysts feel that the business community's stand against the Joint Declaration is short-sighted and motivated by narrow political interests. They feel that Patten's democratic reforms are necessary for Hongkong's progress.

A time for leadership: or is Hongkong's Patten looking for the back door?

Article Abstract:

Hongkong Gov Chris Patten's appraisal of the current state of Sino-British negotiations over the territory's political future fails to acknowledge the need for strong leadership. In his second annual address in 1993, Patten told Hongkong's people that he could 'only be as bold as you' in efforts to secure liberty and democracy against Chinese opposition. This statement seems to open the way to further concessions to the Chinese government.
