Pain in Pusan: South Korean shoe makers are losing their edge

Article Abstract:

The footwear industry which fueled South Korea's dominance in exports is being undermined by rising labor costs. Increasingly, Nike Inc and Reebok International Ltd are sourcing their products from countries offering cheaper labor, such as China and Indonesia. However, the industry's high productivity and the availability of supplies and components for the manufacturing process could be strengthened if South Korean investments are allowed into North Korea, providing the industry with a source of cheap labor.
