Down the wire: Internet trading is soaring in the US, but the UK lags behind. The government hopes to boost new Net business with its e-commerce strategy

Article Abstract:

More than 20% of Uk transactions are already electronic according to Paul Virgo, strategic advisor to the Institute for the Management of Information systems (IMIS). It is relatively easy to create an e-commerce web site using off-the-shelf tools. It is also important to offer levels of security that are equal to those in the physical world, and major IT companies have been working on the Secure Electronic Transaction (SET) standard for years. Online legislation is a difficult area, and the issue is whether there is lack of law, or too much already in place.

The US: time to cool down?

Article Abstract:

The US has seen strong economic growth since the beginning of the 1990s, with unemployment now down to 5.3% of the labour force and core inflation at around 2.5%. Many observers are now questioning how long this period of strong growth and low inflation can continue. The supply-side growth potential is around 2-2.5% a year, while the economy is expanding at a higher rate. It is likely that the Federal Reserve will wish to take action shortly to cool down economic growth before inflation begins to emerge.

Tracking down a railroad man

Article Abstract:

Bob Horton, aged 56, became chairman of Railtrack, UK track and stations operator, in 1993. The company, formerly part of British Rail, is set to be privatized in May 1996, following the rescheduling of a 1.5 billion pounds sterling debt burden. Bob Horton, who spent 35 years of his career with oil company BP, is said to have inexhaustible energy and his bulldozing attitude could be essential if he is to turn the ailing British railroad concern into a profitable organisation.
