Dragon's breath: Mongolia fears China's economic clout

Article Abstract:

Economic relations between Mongolia and China are burgeoning rapidly. The end of preferential trade with the Soviet Union has compelled Mongolia to turn to China for trade and investment, while China's growing economy and need for raw materials has induced it to seek out Mongolia as an economic partner. The shipment of Chinese-made textiles from Mongolia caused the US to threaten to revoke Mongolia's quota-free access to American markets. Mongolia's population of only 2.3 million people will limit Chinese investment in the near future.

Beneath the steppes: Mongolia has trouble developing its mineral wealth

Article Abstract:

Mongolia's abundance of valuable minerals has failed to attract large numbers of foreign investors since the country was opened to investment in 1990. Oil, coal, gold and fluorspar are among the resources present in Mongolia. Poor infrastructure, geographical isolation and legal difficulties arising from the change to a market economy have combined to discourage foreign investment in new mines and wells. Mongolia hopes to overcome these problems and attract investors in two oilfields, the Tamtsag and Tsagaan Els.

Press of the steppes: Mongolian publisher dreams of being a media mogul

Article Abstract:

Bat-Erdeniyn Batbayar is the publisher of Mongolia's first private newspaper, and he wants to become a media magnate in his country. The Mongolian stock exchange made its first public shares offering for his paper, which is titled 'Today.' The government's relations with the media have liberalized so that pluralism now exists. The state-run broadcasting system is even used by private companies on off hours lacking government programs.
