Rattling sabres

Article Abstract:

Possible indications of an unsettled political situation in North Korea have prompted the US to beef up its military strength in the region. North Korea had already aroused international concern by wanting to leave the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) when several events, such as the unexplained closing of North Korea's Sunan airport, suggested that leader Kim Il Sung and his son and heir Kim Jong Il may be engaged in a power struggle with the military. The US may send an aircraft carrier to the Sea of Japan to bolster diplomatic efforts to persuade North Korea to stay within the NPT.

Lesser evil: after Chinese brush-off, North Korea courts U.S

Article Abstract:

North Korea is seeking economic aid from the US because China is slowly withdrawing all aid. China's growing power in the region is being used to convince the US while South Korea is being ignored. North Korea hopes to establish a new relationship with the US outside of the four-party armistice from the Korean War and hopes to exclude both South Korea and China. The balance of power angle has been adopted by North Korea to such an extent that rather than asking for the withdrawal of US troops in South Korea, the troops are accepted as necessary and even valuable for the power balance.

Great leader's gambit: Pyongyang set for nuclear talks with the US

Article Abstract:

North Korea and the US will conduct negotiations on Jun 2, 1993 concerning North Korea's withdrawal from the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) on Jun 12. Clinton administration officials hope to persuade the government of North Korean leader Kim Il Sung to revoke its provocative decision to leave the NPT. However, the administration agreed to the Jun 2 meeting only after deciding that a military attack on North Korea's nuclear facilities was not feasible. North Korea may ask for unacceptable concessions in return for rejoining the NPT.
