Durex unveils steamy ads to woo young U.S. buyers

Article Abstract:

London International Group PLC, a manufacturer of condoms, has launched an new advertising campaign for its Durex line of condoms. The ad campaign, which was developed by the McCann-Erickson advertising agency, features naked couples passionately embracing one another to underscore the fun side of making love. The promotional effort is a marked departure from the company's sensitive and AIDS-awareness-themed ads. The firm has expressed optimism that the campaign will allow Durex to compete more effectively with the Trojan condom brand of Carter-Wallace for the youth market.

BAT joins forces with Rothmans in $8.67 billion deal

Article Abstract:

Rothmans International BV has agreed to a merger with British American Tobacco PLC in a deal that has been valued at $8.67 billion. Industry analysts have said that the merger of the tobacco industry's fourth and second, respectively, companies still must be approved by government regulators. Ther merger will create a company that will be poised to compete with American tobacco producers in an increasingly competitive global market.

Hearing to decide on U.K. plaintiffs in tobacco suit

Article Abstract:

A hearing began Dec 7, 1998 to determine the scope of the UK's first class-action lawsuit against Britain's biggest tobacco companies, Imperial Tobacco PLC and Gallaher Group PLC. The 3-year statute of limitations for pursuing claims has expired for 36 of the 52 lung-cancer sufferers lodging the complaint. Imperial and Gallaher control 80% of the UK cigarette market. The trial date has been set for Jan 2000.
