Dutch courage for the future: As the debate about poor UK housing design standards continues, Maccreanor Lavington shows what can be achieved - at least in the Netherlands

Article Abstract:

Anglo-Dutch architectural practice Maccreanor and Lavington has realized its second housing project in Holland on the site of the former military airfield of Ypenburg. The project includes two four-storey buildings for a housing association each containing 34 apartments. The buildings are simple and L-shaped, with mono-pitch roofs, clad in North German engineering brick and wood. The interior spaces are well defined and large windows establish a strong link between the individual dwelling and the outside world. Their approach to Ypenburg recurs in other projects currently underway, including housing, offices and commercial buildings.

Precision vision

Article Abstract:

Local people helped contribute ideas to the design of an architect-designed block of flats and shops in Hulme, Manchester, UK. Imaginative use of brickwork has given the development of shops and 50 flats a non-uniform appearance which follows no set patterns or shapes. The flats were designed by architectural firm Mills Beaumont Leavey Channon, which ran a design shop to encourage local participation in the project.
