EU launches full inquiry of Telia-Telenor merger

Article Abstract:

The proposed merger between Sweden's Telia AB and Norway's Telenor ASA has come under the scrutiny of the European Commission's antitrust regulators. The merger agreement, which has been valued at up to $47 billion, will be subjected to a four month investigation as the result of insufficient concessions offered by Telia and Telenor. Industry analysts have said that the European Commission regulators will pressure the companies to sell of certain cable television operations.

WorldAccess agrees to buy Star Telecom

Eager to expand its presence in the rapidly growing European telecommunications market, American-based WorldAccess Inc. announces its intent to acquire Star Telecommunications Inc. for euro dollar 645 million. WorldAccess hopes that this acquisition will bring the company closer to achieving its goal of becoming a consolidator of international telephone companies, especially those in Europe.
