Earning their keep: new regime will have to put the economy in order

Article Abstract:

The new Cambodian government will have to deal with a variety of economic problems. The government, which will take power once the result of the May 1993 UN-sponsored election is final, will have to pay particular attention to spreading the benefits of economic growth more evenly. UN activity in Cambodia has fueled growth by providing cash and credit, but little of this economic development has reached the countryside where 85% of the people live. This inequity could produce politically dangerous dissatisfaction.
