Special relationship: US Congress mulls bill to support Hongkong

Article Abstract:

The US administration, through a senate testimony by Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia Richard Solomon on Apr 2, 1992, expressed support for a Congressional proposal to formalize US ties with Hongkong. The Hongkong bill was authored by Sen Mitch McConnell and aims to ensure full implementation of the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration on Hongkong when the territory reverts to Chinese rule in 1997, especially the granting of autonomy to some special administrative regions. At the same time, supporters of the proposal are wary of causing damage to US-China relations.

Roll of dishonour: Asian countries head list of US targets

Article Abstract:

India, Thailand and Taiwan lead the Asian countries in violations of intellectual property rights laws. Other Asian nations, including South Korea, the Philippines and Indonesia were also included in the list of infringers compiled by the US Trade Representative. However, these countries maintain that they are being targeted by the US' selective policy. While the crackdown on Asian countries occurs, reports of violations by Eastern European and Latin American countries are being overlooked due to political and economic considerations.

Balancing act

Article Abstract:

Honda wants to obtain advice on the design of future car models from American managers at the company's plants in East Liberty and Marysville, OH. Accordingly, the Japan-based company set up its North American Task Group, in which about 50 American employees in such specialties as engineering and production live in Japan for one to three years. This allows the Americans to spend time at Honda's Japanese facilities and to suggest what design features will make new cars marketable in the US.
