Echoes of a shooting

Article Abstract:

Student demonstrations were held in Mexico City in 1968, and students were shot in a square in the city, with estimates of between 150 to 500 people killed, though official estimates are of between 22 and 43 dead. There has not been an official investigation into those events. President Ernesto Zedillo was a school student in 1968 and he later tried to have a paragraph written in school history books on the shooting, but was not allowed to do so. It may be too late to bring the guilty to justice, but the truth should be known.

Baby steps towards change

Article Abstract:

Several small but important changes have taken place in Mexico since Pres Vicente Fox took office in 2000. The government has been criticised for lack of management and direction, and many major reforms have been abandoned. However, bureaucracy has been cut and the civil service is more flexible.

Democracy day in Mexico: the new Congress has opened with the PRI in an unfamiliar minority

Article Abstract:

The PRI holds only 239 seats in Mexico's lower house, compared to a coalition of four opposition parties that holds 261, making it the first independent legislature in Mexico in 130 years. The PRI threatened to boycott Ernesto Zedillo's state-of-the-union address, but relented.
