Economic minefield: a new property decree in Vietnam strikes a nerve

Vietnam's decree reiterating the government's ownership of all land is generating confusion and anger throughout the country. Local partners in joint ventures may have to pay more for the lease of the land they contributed to the partnership, forcing some into bankruptcy or to ask that their foreign partner help pay the lease. Banks that hold land rights as collateral fear that if borrowers default, they will have to pay the lease themselves. Property transactions have slowed since the decree took effect on Jan 1, 1995.

Full of beans: Vietnam's coffee industry is bubbling over

Article Abstract:

Vietnam has developed a strong and remarkably productive coffee industry that provides many farmers with incomes far above the national average, but poor quality and a bad business reputation remain problems. Coffee exports from the 150,000 hectares now under cultivation earned $400 million on 165,000 tonnes in 1994, and could surpass $500 million on up to 200,000 tonnes in 1995. The government hopes to add another 110,000 hectares by 2000, and persuade more minority farmers to switch from opium to coffee cultivation.
