Economic realities may stir China to reassesses relations

Article Abstract:

The series of economic and financial crises which hit Asia the previous months have raised several political implications. As Japan loses its status as East Asia's economic leader, analysts believe that the region must be able to adopt a new pattern of international relations in order to keep pace with the renewed domestic politics. Some experts refuse to believe that China is competent enough to act as the region's leader, due to its long-winding economic conflicts with Southeast Asian counterparts.

The illusion of Chinese power haunts Europe...

Article Abstract:

The success of Chinese opposition to the appointment of Christopher Patten as a trade commissioner for the European Union (EU) is a demonstration of China's clout within the EU's membership. The EU's accession to Chinese wishes is seen as a surprising development especially after the mistaken bombing of China's Belgrade embassy and the country's subsequent actions showed its inherent weakness and irrelevance in affairs outside of Asia.

Taiwanese officials hope subtle nuclear campaign will force U.S. to reaffirm security umbrella

Article Abstract:

The Taiwanese government is pursuing an indirect drive to remind the international community that the Taiwanese military can complete its development of a nuclear deterrent. The subtle campaign is aimed at preventing US efforts to unite them with mainland China. Taiwan clearly hopes that a nuclear deterrent will compel the US to reassert its pledge to safeguard Taiwan's security.
