Managing production with flexible capacity deployment for serial multi-stage manufacturing systems

Article Abstract:

A production control policy that is based on the planned lead time and the manufacturing capacity requirement can decrease the variance of production output for all manufacturing stages. The production control policy was developed by a serial multi-stage manufacturing system model which is characterized by random customer order arrivals and a stochastic manufacturing environment. The model developed offers a medium for analyzing the correlations among the production output, the planned time and the actual manufacturing flow time.

A flexible approach to configure flexible manufacturing cells

Article Abstract:

A procedure for optimally exploiting the flexibility of group technology is introduced. The procedure includes a multiple-period planning model and a grouping algorithm that facilitates the reconfiguration of flexible manufacturing cells (FMC) through a decomposition method. This enables the best part-machine combination to be generated via the selection and grouping of parts into parts families and machines into smaller FMCs.

Tool planning models for flexible manufacturing systems

Article Abstract:

An analysis on the interface between tool planning and the Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMSs) loading and routing decision is presented. It was established that tool policy has an impact on the flexibility and planned makespan of an FMS. An aggregate tool planning model with an efficient solution algorithm was developed. The model reduces the number of tools needed by 55%.
