Pacific Rim on recovery path: economic council forecasts a return to growth

Article Abstract:

The Pacific Economic Cooperation Council forecasts all but three of the Pacific Rim economies to post an economic recovery in 1999, given the expansionary policies adopted by most of these countries in 1999. In its latest regional outlook, the non-government body predicts that Hong Kong, Indonesia and Japan are the only Pacific Rim economies that are not expected to resume growth in 1999. It also presents a bleak outlook for Colombia, although it concedes that the Latin American country will post a 1.4% growth during the year. The rest of the Pacific Rim economies, namely, Brunei, Chile, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam, are all forecast to return to growth.

Right medicine would help: despite fund overflow, investors may return

Article Abstract:

The Institute for International Finance has predicted that investments in the five hardest-hit Asian countries of the Philippines, Indonesia, South Korea, Malaysia, and Thailand will further decrease in 1998. Net private capital outflows have already amounted to some $12 billion in 1997, with a total infusion of about $199.6 billion in the same period. The five countries were severely affected by the crisis due to the abundance of short-term debts and mismanagement of foreign exchange reserves.

Pacific rim nations are likely to sustain modest growth

Article Abstract:

The recent annual regional forecast issued by the Pacific Economic Cooperative Council has indicated that, excluding the US and Japan, major economies of Pacific rim countries will expand at an average annual rate of 5.5% to 5.7%, while reducing the annual inflation rate to 5.35 in 1998. The projected average growth rates are in contrast to the perception of an end to the boom of Asian economies.
