Malaysia projects GDP growth; Private forecasts set rate between 1% and this year

Article Abstract:

Malaysian central bank has forecasted economic growth of 1% to 2% in 1999. The country has suffered from the economic crisis that hit the region. Its gross domestic product dropped by 6.7% in 1998. Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad laid down capital controls in Sep 1998 to protect the country from the Asian economic crisis. This move was opposed by some of his cabinet officers who were eased out of their positions. As a result, the country is experiencing simultaneous economic and political instability.

Malaysian expats mull return

Article Abstract:

Malaysian computer wizards who have migrated to the United States in search for greener pastures are considering the possibility of returning to their home country in line with the plans of the government to build a computer park in the country. These Malaysians, however, are dubious of the government's plan to build a techno park in the country saying that the economic returns of such a district is still in question.

A different economic path: plan to include cabinet pay cuts, hold on project

Article Abstract:

Malaysia's economic reform packages have been unveiled by Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim which includes holding megaprojects and sweeping budget cuts. Other policy changes aside form the 18% budget spending cuts include reduction in imports, restricting bank credits and holding stock market fund raising activities. Ibrahim also said that a bailout package is in progress.
