Economising on fuel and maintenance

Article Abstract:

Chemopetrol (Litvinov, Czech Republic), chemical company, expects to save a significant amount of fuel in 1999 due to modernisation. After the company commissions its modernised heating plant, it will also see a drop in costs on maintenance because it will not need to spend high sums on the original equipment. The reconstruction, the first stage of which was started at the end of 1993, cost 2.5 bil Kc. It included the installation of eight new brown-coal granulation steam boilers from ABB Energeticke systemy (ABB ES) (Czech Republic), which were worth a total of 1.6 bil Kc. The boilers enable the company to burn industrial and civil sludges. The reconstruction engaged 260 employees of ABB ES and 350 employees of other firms.

Externalities and motor fuel taxes

Article Abstract:

The UK government aims to increase motor fuel taxes by 5% in real terms on an annual basis by 2005. This contrasts sharply with the recommendation from the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution, Transport and the Environment, which stated that motor fuel taxes should be doubled in real terms by the same time. Some observers feel that the Commission's approach contains the danger of focusing all the reduction in harmful emissions on the transport sector. However, the Commission feels that this sector is a key source of pollution.
