Eddie in the lion's den

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom interest rates were raised in Jun 1998, and this was largely due to concern about pay rises in the private sector. Public sector pay rises have been restrained. Labor unions complain that it is the lowest paid who are most affected by this restraint, and they seek a higher minimum wage than the government is prepared to offer. UK interest rates may have reached a peak and a rate cut is more likely following the release of data showing a slwodown in earnings growth from spring 1998.

Ballad of the global worker

Article Abstract:

Economists disagree about how much globalization drives down wage rates in developed countries. A review of recent studies seems to indicate that trade is not the major factor in declining wage rates for unskilled workers. New technology probably plays a greater role in wage deflation.
