Prestigious firms occupy the building that houses the Jakarta Stock Exchange headquarters, but tenants are voicing problems with maintenance that would not be expected in the chic, capitalistic structure. There are water stains and cracks in the walls, leaking windows and roof, faulty plumbing, and unreliable elevators. The developer is using an outdoor elevator to pull some Australian troubleshooters up the Gedung Bursa Efek's glassy sides to pick out improperly installed fixtures. However, the building is appreciated by tenants for the fiber-optic link with the first-floor stock exchange.

On the way up: the army's youngest general has come a long way

Article Abstract:

The successful rescue of hostages held by Free Papua Movement guerrillas in Irian Jaya is considered a feather in the cap of up-and-coming Indonesian Brigadier General Prabowo Subianto. After hostage negotiations by the Red Cross broke down, Prabowo decided to have his elite troops move in. Two Indonesian hostages had been killed by the rebels, but six Europeans and three Indonesians were rescued. Prabowo is the youngest general in the Indonesian Army, and further promotions are expected, in part because he is the son-in-law of President Suharto.

Relatively powerless: without a lobby recovery of World War II dead stalls

Article Abstract:

The remains of eight US servicemen, who disappeared in 1945, and their B-25 bomber aircraft were discovered in 1995 by a helicopter pilot, high in the Irian Jaya mountain range. Although the Central Identification Laboratory has been informed, the US Pacific Command claims that the political situation in Irian Jaya is too dangerous for recovery. There are concerns that the servicemen still unaccounted for from the conflict in Indochina are taking precendence over those unaccounted for from World War II.
