Edinburgh's show

Article Abstract:

There is a greater contribution from architects to the 1992 Royal Scottish Academy summer show, held in Edinburgh, Scotland, than in previous years. There were 62 architectural entries, mostly from Edinburgh firms, which tends to give the architectural work an East coast bias. The most forceful exhibit is that by Benson & Forsuth for the new National Museum for Scotland but much other work is rather mundane, particularly that of Lothian Regional Council. However, the general impression is of Scotland moving forward towards Europe, and it is a pity few talented young architects have submitted work.

Architecture as motif

Article Abstract:

'Like Nothing Else in Tennessee' is an exhibition of sculpture, installation and photography at the Serpentine Gallery, London, England. Dan Graham's open-air pavilion and Marin Kasimir's photo-panoramas are the two finest pieces. Ludger Gerdes shows two sculptures with architectural symbolism. Mullican has an interesting backlit computer-generated perspective of an abstract city, while Langlands & Bell also have a map-like work with 'Ivrea,' a white relief of comparative typology.

Visions of a grand era

Article Abstract:

The Villa Hugel holds an exhibition on an European city every two years. London between 1800 and 1840 was the capital of an empire and the exhibition shows the grand plans made by George IV and architect, John Nash to create an architecturally splendid city. The plans for wide boulevards and expensive housing were never fully realised. The exhibition also covers artistic and scientific aspects of the city.
