Gilding cabbages

Article Abstract:

A relative of the cabbage plant can concentrate gold in its leaves with the aid of ammonium thiocyanate, and this could be of interest to the mining industry. A bacterium called Thiobacillus ferro-oxidans could replace ammonium thiocyanate to allow the plants to penetrate more deeply with fewer environmental consequences. Plants can also be used to absorb toxic metals like lead and mercury. Genetically engineered plants can remove methyl mercury from soil and pass a version into the air that is less toxic.
