Election boomerang: crackdown on Hyundai may have backfired

Article Abstract:

Raids on the Hyundai business group founded by Chung Ju Yung show that the South Korean government's stand may not be neutral in the Dec 1992 presidential elections. Chung is the United People's party (UPP) presidential candidate, and police found evidence of Hyundai providing him with Won 55 billion for his campaign. Members of the National Alliance for Democracy and Unification have also been accused of campaign work for Democratic Party leader Kim Dae Jung without registering themselves. The government, however, seems to be overlooking the Democratic Liberal Party's (DLP) transgressions.

Civilian mandate: radicals lose out in presidential poll

Article Abstract:

Democratic Liberal Party (DLP) leader Kim Young Sam's victory in the presidential election indicates the introduction of moderate political and economic reform in South Korea. Kim Young Sam defeated Democratic Party (DP) leader Kim Dae Jung by 1.9 million votes in the Dec 18, 1992 election. Kim Young Sam was, however, helped by the government who organized voter support for him. Kim Dae Jung announced his retirement from politics, and Chung Ju Yung, defeated leader of the United People's Party (UPP,) is faced with the task of rebuilding his party's image.

Against the ruler

Article Abstract:

The victory of Hyundai Corp founder Chung Ju Yung's party in South Korea's parliamentary elections and his possible presidential candidacy are causing uneasiness in the country's political circles. The electoral success of Chung's Unification National Party drew a quick response from Pres Roh Tae Woo who endorsed Kim Young Sam as the Democratic Liberal Party's presidential candidate. However, Chung's advanced age and inexperience in politics could serve as drawbacks in his presidential bid.
