Wireless shoot-out

Article Abstract:

Apple Computer will use two forms of infrared wireless communication in its soon to be marketed Newton handheld computer. Wireless communication would allow Newton to be the highly mobile system envisioned by Apple. Apple's partner in producing Newton, Sharp of Japan, will provide point-and-shoot infrared communication similar to what is commonly used in handheld remote controls, while Apple subsidiary Photonics will provide 'diffuse' infrared communications whose transceivers can be pointed in any direction unlike point-and-shoot.

Power plays

Article Abstract:

Japan's Sanyo Electric Company Ltd is replacing its nickel-cadmium rechargeable batteries with environmentally friendly nickel-metal hydride batteries. Sanyo is the leading battery manufacturer in Japan with a 17% growth in 1991 sales. Sanyo batteries claim 50% of the Japanese market and 30% of the world market. Meanwhile, the market for NEC Corp's 16-bit V20 semiconductor chip is growing because of its compatibility with the Intel 8086 microprocessor, its relatively cheap price and its low power demand.

Electronic books on the mark

Article Abstract:

NEC and Fujitsu are now demonstrating prototype electronic book players. NEC's uses familiar floppy disks; Fujitsu's uses pricier memory cartridges, which need no disk drive so the player is lighter. The immediate problem for both companies is distributing titles. That could most easily be done off networked computers, which are scarce in Japan. Automatic dispensers in bookshops, while easier to implement, have significant startup costs.
