Emptier nets

Article Abstract:

Texan fishermen catch shrimps rather than fish, but they face dwindling resources and complain about government regulations. They have invested more in larger boats, and the number of boats in the Texan Gulf Fleet has been reduced to 3,500 in 1998 from 5,200 in 1990. Anglers complain that shrimp fishermen catch red snappers that the anglers themselves wish to catch. Anglers contribute to the state economy by spending in bait stores, restaurants and motels, and their complaints are taken seriously. Shrimping nets have to have fish excluders in 1998. The shrimp fishermen complain that shrimps can escape, and they claim that pollution is the cause of a drop in the red snapper population.

The lobster and the whale: fishing

Article Abstract:

The US National Marine Fisheries Service has proposed new lobster fishing regulations designed to stem the decline in the North Atlantic right whale population. Lobstermen contend that the regulations are onerous, and that collisions with ships cause many more whale deaths than lobster nets do.

The price of lobster thermidor

Article Abstract:

The island of Roatan, near Honduras, is the center of the US lobster industry. Little care has been given to the Miskito Amerindians who dive for the lobsters. Though training has improved to a degree, the equipment and working conditions are poor and many divers end up paralyzed yearly.
