Teetering on the see-saw

Article Abstract:

The Supreme Court could become an issue in US presidential politics in 2000. There is a narrow conservative majority on the court, which is to issue judgements on a number of controversial issues in 1999-2000. The divisions within the Supreme Court may become more obvious, as may its ability to decide on national policy. Campaign finance is one of the issues that the Supreme Court is to decide on. There are also a number of cases relating to the balance of power between state governments and Congress. New appointments to the Supreme Court are likely to become an important issue.

Islam and the ballot box

Article Abstract:

Muhammad Khatami won, with 69% of the vote, Iran's presidential election largely due to his liberal ideas on human rights and personal freedom. The 88% voter turnout was nearly double that of the 1993 presidential election, which indicates that voters believed that candidates clearly differed from one another.
