With the grain

Article Abstract:

A 7.3 million pounds sterling restoration programme is being undertaken at the historic twelfth-century cathedral in the town of Peterborough, UK. The central part of the project is to conserve the ceiling which is made of timber and is the only existing example of its type left in the country. The intricate nature of the ceiling design requires a multidisciplinary approach from the conservation team. The difficult location and delicate materials used for the ceiling require careful planning and expertise from restoration professionals.

Keeping the rates down

Article Abstract:

The rates for business premises will be revalued on 1 April 2000 and the calculation will be based on rents payed on 1 April 1998. Businesses will receive forms asking for details of these rent levels and rating lists will be built up from these. Failure to return the forms is a criminal offence. People who want advice should ensure they approach a chartered surveyor because they are competent to give such information, have indemnity insurance and abide by a code of conduct.
