UK private equity companies will be able to take benefit of the emerging market for management buyouts in continental Europe but they do need to have access to local business expertise. They will also need to be aware a more active market will lead to greater competition. Deals in Europe take much longer to agree than in the UK. The institutional buyout market has been thriving in continental Europe for some time unlike the UK where is less popular. Managers in Europe are becoming more familiar with management buyouts. France and Germany are starting to develop a good buyout market.

Article Abstract:

Total value of management buy-out and buy-in activity in the UK is estimated at 4.7 billion pounds sterling for the first half of 1996, according to the Centre for Management Buy-out Research. However, the statistics do not reveal details of the significantly high number and value of unsuccessful bids which have also taken place over the last 18 months. An overview of portfolio management from a senior debt stance is given.
