Thais climb on the learning curve with latest election

Article Abstract:

Thailand's 1996 general elections have shown indications that the Thai electorate has matured politically. Results reveal that Thai voters are beginning to base their choices on which party a candidate belongs to, rather than making their voting decisions based on personality. Urban voters were observed to put a premium on the country's macroeconomic performance, as they backed up the Democratic Party, while rural voters supported candidates who have protected their interests, as evidenced by the strong showing of the New Aspiration Party which garnered 125 seats.

Vote results are delayed

Article Abstract:

Indonesia's first ever parliamentary elections turns out to be a complicated one, compelling election officials to delay the final electoral results until the early part of July 1999. Aside from inconsistent tallies and conflicting results, much of the delay was caused by the commission's inefficient vote-counting system. Such delays have raised questions over the country's transition to a democratic form of government.
