Energy in Inverness: the themes of this year's RIAS convention were influenced by one of its settings: the eco-community of Findhorn

Article Abstract:

The themes of the RIAS convention were sustainability and perspectives. One of the settings for the convention was Findhorn, an experimental settlement in the north east of Scotland, which houses 22 new ecological buildings. Head engineer of Findhorn John Talbott, spoke about the problems of defining sustainability and its importance in new construction techniques. David Cowling reflected on 50 years of the New Towns movement in Scotland, and Lucien Kroll, a Belgian architect, also focused on communities.

Sensing the urban

Article Abstract:

An enthusiasm for urbanism is central to the work of architect Fred Koetter. Koetter believes that a successful city is dense and vital. His architectural practice, Koetter, Kim and Associates, has worked on urban schemes in a range of countries, but it may be best known in the UK for the masterplan of Canary Riverside, London. Koetter believes that new technology, despite permitting people to disperse geographically, may reinforce the desire to live alongside other people in densely-packed areas.
