Environmental policy: the next generation

Article Abstract:

Environmental reform in the US, where the environmental movement has progressed beyond its early crusading stage, illustrates the potential pitfalls associated with environmental policy making. The dominant role of political symbolism in environmental policy making leads to the implementation of legislation to satisfy specific interests. Dealing with environmental legislation on a medium-by-medium basis does not take into account that tackling one source of pollution may create pollution elsewhere. The mass of fragmented environmental requirements also creates problems.

Environmental assessment and the application of an expert systems approach

Article Abstract:

The need to implement EEC legislation on the environment has given rise to a shortage of environmental assessment experts, and the shortfall could be met through applying expert system technology. This technology is a type of artificial intelligence. GAIA, a prototype system, has been developed to screen development projects and also uses the new Environmental Assessment Regulations. GAIA could also be expanded to cover other aspects of environmental assessment.

The impact of environmental improvements on town centre regeneration

Article Abstract:

Evidence reveals that environmental improvements create short-term problems with a time lag before benefits are felt and that they can accentuate and create spatial inequality with diversions between the improved and unimproved areas. The improvements encourage private investment and it is the investment in new and improved attractions that is a critical step towards town centre regeneration.
