Estonian IPO puts spotlight on the Baltics

Article Abstract:

Estonian Telecom Ltd.'s initial public offering (IPO) will place a stronger focus on the Eastern European region. The 3.1 billion kroon ($230 million) offering was launched on January 25, 1999. Estonian Telecom's IPO is the first major offering to take place in Eastern Europe since TPSA of Poland was sold in November 1998. The IPO is the largest to ever be held in the Baltic region's history. The IPO will almost double the market capitalization of the Tallinn exchange.

In Moscow, killing hurts bank reform

The assassination of Andrei Kozlov, deputy chair of Russia's Central Bank, may impact the cleanup of the Russian banking sector that Mr. Kozlov initiated. Mr. Kozlov's murder will also impact Russia's attempts to become a global economic power. Banking is one of the fastest-growing industries in Russia.

Russia's Mobile TeleSystems filed registration documents with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for an initial public offering at the New York Stock Exchange. The company hopes to raise $350 million (376 million euros).
