Indonesian presidency isn't a shoo-in for Megawati

Article Abstract:

Vice President Megawati Sukarnoputri is expected to be the next president of Indonesia if Abdurrahman Wahid is impeached, but her accession is not inevitable. Wahid may compromise to avoid removal from office, or he could turn the impeachment coalition against Megawati and force them to choose another candidate.

Newmont settlement highlights perils of decentralization; Restive provinces and nervous investors test a regional-autonomy approach to development

Article Abstract:

The out-of-court settlement between Newmont Mining Corp. and the local government of the island of Sulawesi over taxes averted a long legal dispute. It also showed how regional governments will act toward foreign companies as power is decentralized in the country under President Abdurrahman Wahid.

Indonesia can overcome obstacles to justice

One of the biggest and most complex issues facing Indonesia as it makes the transition to democracy is how to resolve past crimes on the part of the government. There is little agreement and much controversy about the best way to approach achieving justice.
