Ethnic Chinese lead resurgence of capitalism in Ho Chi Minh City despite former hardships

Article Abstract:

The Vietnamese government's economic reform efforts have allowed capitalism to once again take root in the country. This capitalist resurgence is especially evident in the country's ethnic Chinese community, which is rapidly reviving the economic clout it enjoyed in the former South Vietnam. The community's growing prosperity is reflected in the Cholon district of Ho Chi Minh City, where consumer electronics, imported goods and other signs of material well-being are especially evident. Experts believe that the city's ethnic Chinese, who comprise one-seventh of the population, effectively control some 30% of all commercial activity.

Unflinching investment by overseas Chinese fuels mainland growth and bolsters reforms

Article Abstract:

Overseas Chinese continue to pour investments in their ancestral homeland, in effect bolstering China's development and transforming it into a world power. They intend to continue their support despite the flailing condition of modernization proponent Deng Xiaoping. Such an attitude should encourage post-Deng leadership to continue economic reforms and also lead China towards a more open society.

Ethnic-Chinese family-owned businesses in Asia break with tradition to court foreign partners

Article Abstract:

A growing number of ethnic-Chinese family-owned business firms in Asia are abandoning their guarded tradition and are turning to foreign partners for their expansion plans. Many Asian tycoons are realizing that strategic alliances with Western companies are necessary if they are to thrive in the region's rapidly-maturing markets. Ethnic Chinese dominate virtually all the economies in Asia.
