Ethnic clash clouds Myanmar's future

Article Abstract:

Private talks between Myanmar's ruling State Peace and Development Council and the leader of the National League for Democracy, Aung San Suu Kyi, are leaving out ethnic minority groups who feel their participation is essential to peace in the country. The minority groups are highly distrustful of the ruling Burmans and are disapppointed in Aung San Suu Kyi for failing to acknowledge them before the talks began.

Asean and Myanmar, a troubled union

Article Abstract:

The Association of South East Asian Nations' (Asean) reputation is at stake as Myanmar, a member state since 1997, comes under fire for human rights violations from the International Labor Organization. Asean's policy is not to interfere in its members' governments, but in this case its passivity should be reconsidered as forced labor claims in Myanmar threaten to split the regional organization.
