European PC sales continue to surge

Article Abstract:

Personal computer sales in Europe went up 19.5% in the second quarter of 1998 compared to the same period a year ago, according to Dataquest, a market-research unit of Gartner Group of the US. Sales of PCs in the US for the same period rose by 12%. Leading seller was Compaq Computer Corp. Dell Computer Corp. gained the No. 2 rank for the first time with a quarter-to-quarter growth of 79% dislodging International Business Machines Corp., which registered a slight growth rate of 9%. Dell's strategy of allowing customers configure the PCs they intend to buy through direct telephone and Web sites has reduced Dell's sales costs and has kept its component inventories down.
