European missile firms cement alliance; joint venture shoots to become world's No. 1

Article Abstract:

The leading missile manufacturers in Europe have formed a joint venture that will overtake the United States' Raytheon, No. 1 in the world, while Boeing Co. joined the venture as a partner in bidding for a major U.K. missile tender. Finmeccanica SpA will join the Matra-BAe Dynamics (MBD) joint venture formed by Aerospatiale Matra SA and British Aerospace PLC. The action will create a fully integrated missile firm with revenue of approximately Euro2.5 billion, having 10,000 people in France, Italy, and Britain, under its employment. Boeing plans to join MBD to design the Meteor next-generation air-to-air missile.

European missile joint venture aims to challenge Raytheon for top spot

Article Abstract:

The still-to-be-named of joint venture of Britain's BAE Systems PLC, Aeronautic Defense & Space Co., Finmeccanica SpA of Italy aims to compete with Raytheon Co. of the U.S. in the production of missiles. Currently referred to as the "New MBD", in reference to the joint venture Matra-BAE Dynamics, the company already agreed to work with Boeing Co. in the development of the plane's missiles.

BAe advances its missile for Eurofighter

Article Abstract:

British Aerospace PLC will continue with the development of a new European missile. The missile is designed for the Eurofighter. The US has been calling on Great Britain to use a currently-existing weapon from the US on the Eurofighter. There is an ongoing competition between the US and Britain over who will supply air-to-air missiles for the British Eurofighter jet.
