European unions

Article Abstract:

The planned merger between Zeneca and Astra is part of a wider trend affecting European pharmaceutical companies. Rhone-Poulenc and Hoechst also plan a merger, and such mergers can improve access to the US market. The Astra-Zeneca deal has been better received by investors than the Rone-Poulenc plan to merge with Hoechst. Zeneca and Astra are both world leaders in certain areas. Further mergers are likely to follow, and the European grey market is seen as one source of pressure for European companies.

Drug-induced seizures

Article Abstract:

There have been a number of mergers announced in the pharmaceutical industry, and mergers and acquisitions accounted for $87 billion in 1998. There is a notion that larger companies perform better in the industry, but this is not necessarily true. Mergers may allow companies to reach new markets and cut costs more easily, but they do not always allow companies to attract better brains, and also involve disruption. Research agreements and other alliances may be better than mergers.
