Europe's hold on rates may persist for some time

The European Central Bank maintained an interest rate of 4% despite continuing inflation pressures while policy makers analyze whether current credit market problems will negatively impact economic growth. The ECB gave short-term money markets a $57.49 bil injection, to be followed up with additional three-month funds.

Higher food prices to hit Europe: looming increases spur inflation worries, agriculture-policy shifts

Article Abstract:

Food price inflation for June rose 2.1% in the Euro-zone and rose 4.8% in the U.K. Unusual weather patterns, proliferation of biofuel crops, and increasing worldwide food demand are driving prices upward. In response, the European Union has begun to phase out some subsidies, including diary farm export refunds.
