Expatriate managers and MNC's ability to control international subsidiaries: the case of Japanese MNCs

Article Abstract:

The level of cultural knowledge of expatriates plays a crucial role in establishing the effectiveness of expatriates as a way of controlling international subsidiaries of multinational corporations (MNCs). Investigating a sample of Japanese MNCs showed that while expatriate personnel with sufficient knowledge of the host country helped in the MNC's control ability , those without cultural knowledge did not.

Characteristics of Japanese FDI in the east and the west: understanding the strategic motives of Japanese investment

Article Abstract:

A study examining the differences in strategies adopted by Japanese manufacturing companies for investing in China and USA, countries representing east and west, is presented. Japanese companies prefer the west for foreign direct investment. The reasons for this preference are discussed.
