Facing up to interfaces

Article Abstract:

The call by Lord Egan to standardize the use of design techniques and building materials in the construction industry are almost impossible to achieve as the very nature of design and building methods makes no two buildings the same. Egan would prefer designers to use similar methods to those employed by car designers, although the two disciplines are completely different.

Exploring 'product architecture'

Article Abstract:

Standardization of many construction industry products could greatly increase the speed with which buildings are constructed, while reducing overall costs and ensuring a high degree of build quality. The use of product characteristics in a generic model form could be used throughout the construction industry to allow suppliers, architects and contractors to produce buildings which vary slightly but are built on almost the same platform.
